How to Choose Your Hero

Understanding Hero Attributes

Every hero in Dota 2 has a primary attribute that determines their stat growth and playstyle. Strength heroes tend to be durable frontliners, Agility heroes are typically damage dealers, Intelligence heroes often have powerful spells, and Universal heroes gain damage from all attributes equally.

Strength Heroes

Strength heroes gain 1 HP per point of Strength and are naturally tanky. They often serve as initiators, frontliners, or durable carries. Their high HP pools make them excellent at absorbing damage in teamfights. Popular strength carries include Sven and Wraith King, while heroes like Axe and Tidehunter excel as offlaners.

Agility Heroes

Agility heroes gain armor and attack speed from their primary attribute, making them the premier right-click damage dealers. Most hard carries in Dota 2 are agility heroes because they scale incredibly well with items. Heroes like Anti-Mage, Phantom Assassin, and Faceless Void become nearly unstoppable in the late game with proper farm.

Intelligence Heroes

Intelligence heroes have larger mana pools and mana regeneration, allowing them to cast spells more frequently. They dominate the early and mid game with powerful abilities but may fall off in the late game unless they have scaling mechanics. Many supports and midlaners are intelligence heroes.

Universal Heroes

Universal heroes gain damage from all three attributes equally (0.7 per point of each). This makes them versatile and often able to fill multiple roles. They were introduced to give certain heroes more flexibility in their item builds and playstyles.

Choosing Based on Role

When selecting a hero, consider your team's needs. A balanced team typically wants a hard carry, a midlaner, an offlaner, and two supports. Look at what your team lacks - if you need initiation, pick heroes like Tidehunter or Mars. If you need damage, consider Phantom Assassin or Juggernaut. If you need saves, Crystal Maiden or Dazzle can protect your cores.

Counter-Picking

One of the most important skills in Dota 2 is understanding hero matchups. Every hero has strengths and weaknesses that can be exploited. For example, Anti-Mage counters intelligence heroes with high mana costs, while Axe counters illusion-based heroes. Learning these matchups will significantly improve your win rate.
