Magic Wand
Essential early game item that stores charges when nearby enemies cast spells. Provides a burst of HP and mana that can save your life in clutch situations. Buy this on almost every hero.
Boots of Speed
Basic movement speed item. Should be one of your first purchases. Upgrade into Power Treads, Phase Boots, Arcane Boots, or Tranquil Boots depending on your hero and role.
Bracer / Wraith Band / Null Talisman
Cost-efficient stat items for the early game. Bracer for strength/HP, Wraith Band for agility/damage, Null Talisman for intelligence/mana. Double up on these for a strong early game.
Power Treads
Versatile boots that provide attack speed and can switch between attributes. Tread switching is an advanced technique that saves mana and increases efficiency. Best for carries and midlaners.
Phase Boots
Provides bonus damage and an active that grants movement speed and unit-walking. Excellent for heroes that need to chase or position aggressively in fights.
Blink Dagger
One of the most impactful items in Dota 2. Allows instant teleportation up to 1200 units. Essential for initiators like Axe, Tidehunter, and Earthshaker. Also great for escape and positioning.
Black King Bar (BKB)
Grants spell immunity when activated. The most important defensive item for cores. Without BKB, most carries will be disabled and killed in teamfights. Duration decreases with each use.
Mekansm
Team healing item that restores HP to nearby allies. Excellent for early teamfight lineups. Usually built by offlaners or position 4 supports who can farm it quickly.
Desolator
Provides significant damage and armor reduction on hit. Excellent for physical damage heroes who want to push towers and burst enemies. The armor reduction works on buildings too.
Aghanim's Scepter
Upgrades a hero's abilities, often adding new mechanics or significantly improving existing ones. The upgrade varies for every hero - check your hero's specific Aghanim's upgrade before buying.
Force Staff
Pushes any unit 600 units in the direction they're facing. Incredible utility for saving allies, escaping, or pushing enemies into bad positions. Core item for many supports.
Eul's Scepter of Divinity
Cyclones a target for 2.5 seconds, making them invulnerable but unable to act. Use it to set up combos, dispel debuffs from yourself, or disable enemies. Provides great mana regen and movement speed.
Daedalus
The premier critical strike item. Provides 88 damage and a 30% chance to deal 225% critical damage. Essential for right-click carries who need to maximize their physical damage output.
Butterfly
Provides massive agility, evasion, and attack speed. One of the best items for agility carries. The 35% evasion makes you much harder to kill with physical attacks. Can be countered by Monkey King Bar.
Satanic
Provides lifesteal and a powerful active that grants 175% lifesteal for 6 seconds. Combined with BKB, this allows carries to heal to full HP during fights. A key late-game survivability item.
Eye of Skadi
Provides massive stats across all attributes and a slow on attack. The slow reduces movement speed, attack speed, and HP regen of the target. Excellent on ranged carries and tanky heroes.
Divine Rapier
The highest damage item in the game (+350 damage) but drops on death. A desperation purchase or a game-ending item when you're confident. Extremely risky but can turn lost games around.
Refresher Orb
Resets all ability and item cooldowns. Devastating on heroes with powerful ultimates like Tidehunter, Enigma, or Warlock. Also resets BKB, making it valuable for carries in ultra-late game.
Observer Ward
Provides vision in a large area for 6 minutes. Essential for map control. Place them on high ground for maximum vision. Supports should always have wards available for their team.
Sentry Ward
Reveals invisible units and wards in an area. Use them to deward enemy observers and detect invisible heroes. Always carry sentries when playing against heroes with invisibility.
Glimmer Cape
Grants invisibility and magic resistance to the target. One of the best support items for saving allies from magic damage. The invisibility can also be used for scouting or escaping.
Aether Lens
Increases cast range by 225 and provides mana regeneration. Excellent for supports who need to cast from a safe distance. Builds into Octarine Core later in the game.
Holy Locket
Amplifies all healing and regeneration on the target by 30%. Perfect for healing-focused supports like Dazzle, Witch Doctor, and Oracle. Also stores charges like Magic Wand.
Trusty Shovel (Tier 1)
Dig every 40 seconds to find bounty runes, healing salves, or TP scrolls. A useful utility item that provides consistent value throughout the game. Great for supports.
Philosopher's Stone (Tier 2)
Provides bonus GPM but reduces your attack damage. Perfect for supports who don't rely on right-clicks. The passive gold income helps supports afford their key items faster.
Paladin Sword (Tier 3)
Provides damage, lifesteal, and amplifies all healing received. A strong neutral item for carries who benefit from sustain. The healing amplification synergizes with items like Satanic.
Pirate Hat (Tier 5)
Grants bonus gold on attacks and massive attack speed. One of the strongest tier 5 neutral items. The gold generation can fund buybacks or additional items in the ultra-late game.
Item Build Philosophy
Building the right items at the right time is one of the most important skills in Dota 2. Unlike other MOBAs, Dota 2's item system is incredibly flexible, and the optimal build changes every game based on the enemy lineup, your team composition, and the game state.
Adapting Your Build
Never follow a static item build blindly. Consider these factors when deciding what to buy:
- Enemy Lineup: Are they heavy magic damage? Consider BKB or Pipe. Physical damage? Get armor items. Lots of disables? Prioritize BKB or Linken's Sphere.
- Game Tempo: If your team wants to fight early, build fighting items. If you need to farm, get farming accelerators like Battle Fury or Maelstrom.
- Your Role: Carries should prioritize damage and survivability. Supports should focus on utility and team items.
- Gold Efficiency: Sometimes cheaper items provide more value than expensive ones. Two Wraith Bands can be better than rushing a big item.
Item Timing Windows
Every item has an optimal timing. A 15-minute Blink Dagger on Axe is game-changing; a 30-minute one is too late. Understanding when items are most impactful helps you prioritize your farm and decide when to fight versus when to farm.
Common Item Mistakes
Avoid these common itemization errors that many players make:
- Skipping BKB when the enemy has multiple disables
- Building damage items when you need survivability
- Not buying detection against invisible heroes
- Following pro builds without understanding why they work
- Holding gold for expensive items instead of buying components
