Tidehunter Offlane Guide: Lane Survival, Aura Timing, and Fight-Winning Ravage

Tidehunter is a durable offlaner who turns hard lanes into stable farm and stable farm into decisive teamfights. His job is to protect the map, carry aura items, and use Ravage only when it changes the objective fight.

How Tidehunter Wins

Absorb pressure, buy team items, and save Ravage for objective fights

Tidehunter's threat changes how enemies stand, even before Ravage is cast.

Lane Identity

Use Anchor Smash to reduce carry damage and secure creeps. Kraken Shell lets you survive pressure, but it does not excuse poor lane positioning.

Mid Game Job

Group around towers with aura items. Tidehunter is strongest when his team is ready to hit buildings after a Ravage win.

Late Game Value

Hide Ravage information. Sometimes walking forward without casting is enough to force enemies apart.

Abilities

Skill usage and priority

Do not think of Tidehunter as only Ravage. His lane and aura timing matter just as much.

Gush ability icon

Gush

Use for chase, armor reduction, and setting up kills. Avoid wasting mana if your team cannot follow.

Kraken Shell ability icon

Kraken Shell

Your durability engine. It lets you stand in difficult lanes and ignore some chip damage, but burst still matters.

Anchor Smash ability icon

Anchor Smash

Secures waves and lowers enemy physical damage. Use it before trading with carries.

Ravage ability icon

Ravage

Save for grouped heroes, Roshan fights, tower defense, or high-ground breaks. A single support kill is rarely worth the cooldown.

Phase Plan

  • 0-7 minutes: secure farm with Anchor Smash and avoid feeding before levels.
  • 8-15 minutes: finish aura components and pressure the enemy safe-lane tower.
  • 16-25 minutes: group around Ravage cooldown and force Roshan or tower fights.
  • 26+ minutes: hold buyback-aware Ravage for high-value grouped targets.

Counters and Danger Signs

  • Break effects and percentage damage reduce your frontlining safety.
  • Split-push lineups can waste Ravage by refusing grouped fights.
  • Long cooldown misuse gives enemies a clear timing window.
  • Buying only selfish durability can leave your team without aura support.

Common Mistakes

  • Using Ravage for one low-value kill.
  • Walking into fights without team follow-up.
  • Skipping aura items when your team needs group sustain.

Practice Checklist

  • Review every Ravage and ask what objective followed.
  • Track whether aura timings arrived before first Roshan fight.
  • Practice Blink Ravage from fog angles.
Editor Notes

Tidehunter can fail Ravage and still win the fight

Ravage is one of the best ultimates in Dota 2. But Tidehunter's laning and itemization decide games more than a single ult.

How to dominate lane as Tidehunter

Anchor Smash is a 60-damage reduction at level 1. Against melee carries, stand near the creep wave and use Anchor Smash every time the enemy carry steps up. A PA who does 40 damage per hit instead of 100 cannot farm. The cooldown is 4 seconds — you can out-trade almost any melee hero in the game. The only enemies who beat Tide in lane are double-ranged lanes and heavy magic burst (like a Skywrath + any carry).

Gush priority and timing

Gush reduces armor by 6 at level 1 and reveals invisible heroes. Use it not just for kills but for Roshan vision and area control. If you think the enemy is doing Roshan, Gush the pit from max range. The armor reduction also stacks with Desolator — a Tidehunter with Gush + a Deso carry on your team reduces enemy armor by 13. Anything hit by both dies.
