Dota 2 Hero Guide

Lich Guide: Win lane trades, shield the focused ally, and cast Chain Frost when enemies are trapped or grouped.

Lich is a defensive support who makes allies harder to burst and enemies afraid to group. His best games come from protecting the core who wants to stand and fight.

How Lich Wins

Win lane trades, shield the focused ally, and cast Chain Frost when enemies are trapped or grouped.

Lich protects lanes with Frost Shield, punishes grouped enemies with Chain Frost, and offers strong defensive support.

Lane Identity

Use your first two spells to secure trades, protect important creeps, and make the enemy lane choose between farm and health.

Mid Game Job

Move when your wave is pushed and your first item timing is ready. The goal is not random fighting; it is turning pressure into map control.

Late Game Value

Play around vision and cooldowns. Late fights are won by choosing the right target and preserving enough resources for the second spell cycle.

Phase Plan

  • 0-7 minutes: play the lane around Frost Blast and avoid using your key cooldown without a clear trade or last-hit purpose.
  • 8-15 minutes: secure the first item timing, protect nearby vision, and move only when the wave is pushed.
  • 16-25 minutes: fight around your strongest spell and convert kills into towers, Roshan pressure, or deeper wards.
  • 26+ minutes: hide information, wait for important enemy spells, and choose targets that decide the objective fight.

Counters and Danger Signs

  • Instant disables and silences are the biggest danger when they stop your main spell sequence.
  • Heavy burst punishes greedy positioning before your defensive item is ready.
  • Strong vision control makes your movement predictable and removes surprise angles.
  • Do not force fights into enemy high ground without a clear objective or cooldown advantage.

Common Mistakes

  • Showing on dangerous waves before an objective fight.
  • Buying a greedy item when the game requires a survival or utility timing.
  • Using the ultimate or main disable on a low-value target without follow-up.

Practice Checklist

  • Review the first death and decide whether it came from lane greed, missing vision, or a bad cooldown.
  • Track whether your first major item created a kill, tower, Roshan attempt, or map control.
  • Practice the most common spell sequence in demo mode until it is automatic.
Editor Notes

Frost Shield is the most underrated ability in Dota 2

Most Lich players focus on Chain Frost. The hero's real power comes from a 4-second cooldown spell that blocks more physical damage than any other basic ability.

Frost Shield blocks more than you think

At max level, Frost Shield blocks 80 damage per instance, with 12 instances over 6 seconds. That is 960 total damage blocked on a single target. Against a Templar Assassin or Phantom Assassin who relies on fast physical burst, Frost Shield reduces their effective DPS by nearly 30% during the duration. The cooldown is only 4 seconds — you can shield yourself, then your carry, then your offlaner in the same fight.

Sacrifice positioning tech

Use Sacrifice on a ranged creep while standing behind your carry. The deny denies the enemy offlaner both gold and XP from the ranged creep, which is the single most important creep in the wave. Do this twice before the 5-minute mark and the enemy offlaner will be a full level behind. This is not a niche trick — it is the most impactful thing a Lich can do in the laning stage.
